| A
Survey of College Freshmen Reveals New Trends |
For the past
34 years, UCLA's Higher Education Research Institute has surveyed
college freshman and reported on their attitudes and behaviors.
How stressed are today's freshmen? Do they care about their country?
Are they drinking more beer or less than in previous years?
On this edition of The Merrow Report, John Merrow welcomes Linda
Sax, Associate Director of the UCLA
Higher Education Research Institute's Annual Survey, to answer
those questions and more. |

| Media
Literacy |
Each
week, children spend the equivalent of what an adult spends
working awash in media. They spend an average of 38 hours
a week watching television and movies, surfing the internet,
playing video games and reading magazines, and much of their
media consumption is unsupervised by parents. How does this
sea of media influence children? Should someone be teaching
them how to recognize the hidden messages in what they see,
hear, and read?
On this edition of The Merrow Report, John Merrow welcomes
Bob McCannon, director
of the New
Mexico Media Literacy Project and one of the country's
leading proponents of 'media literacy.' Merrow also talks
with two high school students, Jose
Espinal and Rubin
Polizzi, about their experiences producing media projects
of their own.
