PART 1 (15:00)
No Excuses: Lessons from High Performing, High Poverty Schools
  with Casey Carter
One hears a lot of people - politicians, educators, policy makers - insisting that all children can learn. Yet the belief persists that the most disadvantaged children cannot learn and that schools are powerless to help them. Casey Carter, a fellow at The Heritage Foundation, investigated high-poverty schools where the children are excelling. He talks to John Merrow about the lessons we can learn from these high performing schools.

  Universal Pre-K with Augusta Kappner
Is publicly funded pre-school catching on? There's a growing consensus among educators that pre-kindergarten has lasting benefits for children, but so far Georgia is the only state that provides free universal pre-school to all 4-year olds. Dr. Augusta Kappner, President of the Bank Street College of Education, discusses the benefits of early learning and the obstacles states face in implementing a public pre-kindergarten system.

Bullying is epidemic in American schools. Studies have found that 525,000 attacks, shakedowns, and robberies occur in an average month in public secondary schools, and that 160,000 children miss school every day due to fear of attack or intimidation. Suellen Fried, author of Bullies and Victims: Helping Your Child Through the Schoolyard Battlefield, discusses the psychology behind bullying and what parents and teachers can do to create safer school environments.
