Press
Release:
It's
So Amazing! A Book about Eggs, Sperm, Birth, Babies, and
Families
for
children aged 7 and up
"This
thoughtful, innovative, and comprehensive book helps children
with issues that are on their minds anyway--and gives all
of us the language we need to share with them."--T. Berry
Brazelton, M.D., author of Touchpoints: Your Child's Emotional
and Behavioral Development.
How
does a baby begin? What makes a baby female or male? Why
are some babies twins? How is a baby born? How is a baby
adopted? Children have always had lots of questions about
reproduction and babies--and about sex and sexuality, too.
But today's children are asking questions about sex and
sexuality at younger and younger ages.
And
they are exposed to more information, and misinformation,
than ever before from television, radio, movies, videos,
and the Internet, as well as from friends and older siblings.
In response to repeated requests from parents, teachers,
librarians, and health professionals for an up-to-date book
about sex and sexuality for children aged 7 and up, author
Robie H. Harris and illustrator Michael Emberley have created
It's So Amazing! A Book about Eggs, Sperm, Birth, Babies,
and Families (Candlewick Press, November 1999; $21.99).
In Harris
and Emberley's acclaimed, award-winning It's Perfectly
Normal (for children aged 10 and up), a bird and bee
reflect the real questions and concerns of children, this
time, younger children. It's So Amazing! is designed
so that a younger child can learn about human biology and
healthy sexuality, also so that parents (a child's primary
educators), as well as school and health professionals,
can answer children's questions.
Comic-book-style
full-color artwork accurately and engagingly illustrates
clear and lively text that is age-appropriate and reflects
an elementary school child's interest in biology and how
things work. This colorful book discusses bodies, pregnancy,
birth, adoption, babies, and all kinds of families. It tells
the story of "the amazing egg trip" and "the amazing sperm
trip," showing when and how an egg travels to the uterus
and how sperm travel and meet an egg.
Actual-size
illustrations follow a single cell's growth month to month
over nine months as it finally becomes a baby--ready to
be born. It's So Amazing! explains in vitro and ultrasound;
shows how twins begin; and describes how a fetus gets food
and air, and how the growing baby kicks and hiccups and
burps inside the uterus--before it is born.
It's
So Amazing! discusses sex and love, including love for
a parent, sibling, friend, or pet. It also discusses heterosexual
and homosexual love. It offers age-appropriate information
on sexual abuse and HIV and AIDS, addressing younger children's
questions and concerns. It recognizes and talks about the
positive and negative feelings younger children have about
a new baby coming into the family, while emphasizing the
uniqueness of each and every child.
In addition
to providing information, It's So Amazing! encourages
respect for differences. Vetted and approved by science,
health, and child development experts, this honest, reassuring,
and comprehensive book offers children a fun and fascinating
scientific format for answering their questions and for
keeping them safe, healthy, and unafraid.
