Back to school in New Orleans

When hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans and its public schools, some questioned whether any of its 55,000-plus students would get to come back to
school here this year. A few thousand are coming back, but they’re returning to a system that’s been turned upside down, and not just by a hurricane.

For one thing, the school board, which used to run about 115 schools, now is in charge of just eight. The state of Louisiana is taking over the schools that were failing academically– that’s 90% of the system. And 13 schools are now part of a new, independent district of charter schools. Five of these schools opened Wednesday, December 14th.

In our second segment for the Newshour on New Orleans post-Katrina, we report on the journey taken by teachers, principals and students as they get ready for their second 'first day of school' this year.
