SEARCHING FOR HEROES
Introduction...
teacher helping a student It seems that all we hear these days is bad news about our public schools and our children. Stories on violence, teen-pregnancy, and school failure are recycled with numbing repetition. Read too many and you may think that most children are violent, most schools are failing, and no one cares.

We created "Seaching For Heroes" in response to this drumbeat of overwhelmingly negative news. In truth, most children are not dangerous, most public schools are working, and many adults care deeply about young people.
Hundreds of people across the country told us about outstanding schools, teachers, and programs for children and teenagers that were long overdue for recognition. Our challenge wasn't finding good news - there is plenty of it - it was choosing what good news to report.

"Seaching For Heroes" focuses on adults who get involved- and stay involved- with young people. We concentrated on people who have been helping children for a minimum of five years so we could measure the impact of their work. That narrowed our list of candidates to 28 names.

female student playing the violin We couldn't include every one of them in our PBS documentary, but we'll tell you about them in this viewer guide. We'll also tell you how you can get involved. We're planning another program like this one for next year, so please tell us about the heroes in your community.John Merrow signature
