"It's such a very dangerous thing when patriotism and religion become equated...becomes nationalism and militarism and a complete intolerance for any other point of view. I think it's dangerous too...'The God is on our side thing is extremely dangerous.'"

Caption: I agree with Susan Jacoby as above!! I would take it all a step further and say that Spinosa was correct in beiing the first Pantheist. To me everything, the universe is god and therefor it`s all one natural being and probably nothing supernatural at all!!

There has to be a happy, fair medium situation. I think that the goldern rule would be a good starting point for political decisions.

Caption: I can see patriotism becoming militarism as we speak. First, we have the blurring of distinction between nationalism and patriotism, and I see people (younger and older) all the time who say that we should do things (or refrain from such) because it 'supports the country' or 'supports the troops'. Notice, they don't say that we should or should not do things because it is the right or most beneficial thing to do, which should be the sole reason behind government.

Caption: The 'God is on our side' mentality is indeed a very dangerous thing. The very first item addressed in the American Bill of Rights, whose primary author was James Madison, was the official seperating of any one religion from the power of the state.

Caption: It has always amazed me that one could envision a god who would take sides. Why would god (or God) choose one football team over another, one side of a war over another? It defies both reason and faith. If god is on our side who's on their side? Is theirs more powerful than ours? If god is on our side then, necessarily, there must be more than one god. The equation of religion and nationalism or patriotism is an extremely cynical manipulation of a people by those in power who are without faith of any kind
