SACRIFICE AND WAR |

July 27, 2007
Private First Class LeRon Wilson grew up on the Caribbean island of Trinidad where his father is a military officer. With his
mother he came to Queens when he was 11, enlisting in the U.S. Army after graduating from high
school.
On July 6, PFC Wilson and another member of his platoon were killed when their military vehicle hit a
roadside bomb south of Baghdad. Wilson became the 30th 18-year-old American soldier to be killed in Iraq.
At the same time, a video by journalist Max
Blumenthal has been circulating around the web, which speaks to the issue of youth and sacrifice in a time of
war, but in a very different light. Blumenthal spoke with young people at a recent convention of the College
Republicans, asking them if they planned on enlisting, receiving murky responses:
JUSTIN YORK, UNIV. OF CENTRAL FLORIDA '10: Well I'm an undergraduate right now and I had a scholarship...I just
didn't have any real urge...I just didn't have any strong urge...
RALPH KETTELL, COLBY '09: Why am I not serving? I don't know...I mean... I really support this country strongly
and I...you know... I didn't enlist. There is not much else I can say. I don't think that you can't talk about
this issue if you're not serving.
