I am a bit of a dilettante, Jill of all sports, master of none, so the national parks are perfect for me. Regardless of the entertainment I’m craving at any given moment, there is a park that offers it.
For canoeing the Everglades in early spring is heavenly. Scuba diving or snorkeling in the Dry Tortugas is like starring in one’s own PBS special with colorful fishes and otherworldly spiny lobsters flitting and waving. River running in Big Bend in March can’t be beat. Rock climbing in Yosemite is thrill enough for anyone craving an adrenaline junket. For a marvelous mystery tour, the Anasazi ruins at Mesa Verde can transport me to another time.
Of all these delights, I, being a simple girl, love plain old hiking the best. For that I have a long list of parks: Lassen Volcanic, Zion, Glacier, Yosemite, Canyonlands, Arches and Capitol Reef are among my favorites. The air is so crisp and clear my lungs expand and I can taste the world.
