Pearl Harbor as told to Chad Welker
During the summer of 2009, I visited the USS Arizona and USS Missouri memorials at Pearl Harbor in Honolulu, Hawaii, while chaperoning my daughter?s cheerleading camp. This was an all day event for the cheerleading group and me. At the beginning of the tour of the memorials, a video about them was shown. Although the whole tour was filled with emotion, the video was the most emotional. The most unimaginable thing I witnessed was the oil that seeped up to the surface of the water, known as ?black tears.? I could not believe that after sixty-nine years, oil still seeped up. It is said that the oil will rise until the last survivor dies. I learned and relearned many facts during the tour. I brought back two souvenirs from the tour of the memorials: a replica of the newspaper of the day of the attack, and a book autographed by one of the survivors. Anybody who has the opportunity to visit this island should definitely visit these memorials.
