BiG Bend National Park 1988
The year was 1988 and we packed up a motorhome (we borrowed from our brother-in-law. We droved via the southern route from Connecticut. It was wonderful to go through Louisiana to get a feel for the warmer air and to drived through Texas and head south going past the Amistad Reservoir and stopping in Hondo Texas for a great dinner. When we got there, we didn't realize we had a 25-30 miles drive just to get into the park from the main highway. We were thrilled to see the expanse of desert, cactus, rocks - all things that were different from Ct. We especially enjoyed the low price of the campsite and the people staying in the camps. There were 3 main campgrounds and we visited all of them. There was a small store there, but they didn't even have a loaf of bread? My children (Erik and Cindy) played on the empty stage and stomped around in and just made merry for the entertainment of thier parents. I came dangerously close to a havelina (wild pig) and even uncoved a scorpions for my kids, by lifting a rock. We decided to gently put back the rock and let him be. It was my first vacation to a National Park and my first time out west. I will NEVER forget that wonderful trip to Big Bend National Park.
