I am starting to think I am becoming Republican because it seems like I have been paying more attention to that political party this election…not by choice, but chance. I was so busy over the MLK holiday weekend, I completely spaced on the last Democratic debate that aired this past Monday. Last night I attended the Republican debate at Florida Atlantic University not because I am Republican or actually covering the event, but because I wanted to witness a part of history.
It was very interesting to watch the media hustle and bustle about… tangled cords, blinding lights in almost every direction, cameras, and the bountiful amount of reporters… absolutely a media frenzy. Although overwhelming, it reminded me why I picked this line of work. I felt like a paparazzi weaseling my way through the crowd to try and get up close and personal with the candidates. I snapped a few shots of Ron Paul and Mike Huckabee, but the other candidates were out of sight.
I was disappointed that I didn’t see Mitt Romney. I know Ron Paul gets a lot of criticism, but from what I saw yesterday he seemed the most sincere when answering questions. I could be fooled, but even his body language spoke to me like one less lizard-like.
But what I found most interesting is how many young college students are involved in politics now. At their age, I was worried about other things like working, studying, and staying out of trouble. But the generation behind me seems like they are really on top of things and in tune with the world.
For instance, my little brother is part of this new wave of environmentally friendly, vegan eating, health conscious, save the world a little at a time type of groups. He inspires me because he is so idealistic and believes in doing the right thing not only for himself, but for the world. I sometimes think he may phase out of this fantasy-like idealism of a cleaner, safer, better world; but I truly believe he thinks it can happen one day, and I am starting to believe it too.

I don't think political engagement and idealism are generational attributes per se. I think I'm around the same age as you, and many of my friends in college were political junkies! Several worked on campaigns, and others started magazines, clubs and other outlets to express their inner politicos. College campuses are fertile ground for idealism and activism, and I think it's been that way for a very long time. But yes, it's great to see so many young people excited about the election. Let's hope they encourage their friends and families to vote!
Great commenary...I enjoyed experiencing this thru your eyes.
