Food Prices and the Rice Equation

posted by Jeff Yastine, Senior Correspondent at 6:32 PM on 04/16/08

Photo of Jeff YastineI found it fascinating, in the process of reporting today's story on world food prices, to learn how the impact of changes in one part of the farm economy here in the U.S. can have such broad implications for the rest of the world. Perhaps you've read or heard about some of the riots that have occurred in parts of Africa, Haiti, and Bangladesh over sharply rising prices for rice. The less-obvious aspect of this story is how U.S. rice exports factor into the equation.

The U.S. exports nearly all the rice it grows...and ranks among the top five rice exporters in the world. The interesting fact, pointed out to us by Wachovia Securities grains analyst Bill Nelson, is that U.S. rice growers have in recent years devoted less acreage to rice planting -- and more to corn. Why? Because of the high prices ethanol producers will pay for corn. US acreage has dropped by some 600,000 acres in the past few years, and that's helped play a role in whether rice supplies are adequate to meet rice demand in the rest of the world.

Thanks for the comment. Jeff is substituting for Paul Kangas today, so he might not spot what you've written. I'll make sure it gets to him and to the assignment editor assigned to our new Green Options series. This idea would fit nicely with the series.

Also, you might want to check out this story we did on green buildings last July: Going Green Can Mean Green.

Quick Question Not Related to This Post: Do you know if NBR has any plans on (or is open to) doing something about how the commercial real estate industry is essentially an untapped market in the realm of the 'greening up' movement.

So long As they went through the basic expected adult motions?

... .But this.?

is beyond my wildest dreams as measure of Adult administrative ,.failure.

Insurance payments passing 300 a month. Food bills Passing 300 a month Car payments., actually what car payment nobody can even.? drive anymore.

Oil 123 dollars. Inability as a generation to change over to next energy source. Total Inability as a Generation to manipulate there food source.

2 Recessions maybe 3 now.?

Total failure to enforce as a Generation Basic. Basic immigration.!!!. disastorous Cata clysmical Speculation in there Housing aquisition(s).

complete And totalInability to adminaster any sort of affordable and even at times proper health care.

declineing education.

So bad.?

that my dopey peers have now resorted to importing a quarter of there labor from beneath the equator. A just out of control society and culture.

complete and total failure as a generation to gain control of any sort of legacy retirement account what so ever. ( and whats the point To providing examples to my comments they are anywhere you feel like looking localy or nationaly)

complete inability failure and disaster

as a generation to adhere or to hold to any sort of physcal policy what so ever wether , It be private govermental, even individual or personal.

Two blown up Space shuttles. Inability to evacuate a city before a huriciane. Total Inability to guard against an attack from a collection of third World barbarians.

An absolute 'hand' 'me' 'give' 'me' war. With all sorts of top of the line armnaments.

!!!! Now into it's 6 th year.

I mean holly crap.

When the baby boomers first tagged us with the term Generation X back in 1985.

For our lack of motivation , intellegence distractiveness , and over all comparable inabilities.

might be time to look for an apartment in The north pole.

Ray

and please.? feel free to comment anyway which way you like

lloll.?

Unfortunately your expert guest from J.P.Morgan proved like previous analysts(as the rest of the media),that they are out of touch and in denial,(like G.H.Bush) about the Recession.Their income is over $200,000, and their misleading influence which serves the American Elite,is disturbing. Basic goods are 20%-50% higher from last year. The price of houses and cars are higher too not lower as he claims, without even considering their devaluation !
