The Great Unwind Continues

posted by Darren Gersh, Washington Bureau Chief at 11:43 AM on 09/15/08

Power Town Title GraphicSomething fundamental is going on here. The Great Unwind I wrote about a while back continues, in fact it's accelerating.

The strength of the United States has been, to a great degree, our financial strength. Our control of world markets, the dollar's role as the world's currency, our reputation for financial expertise -- all of these things served to bolster, if not help create, our power in the world.

Now look. When Washington tells other countries (China) to "fix" their financial system, they will tell us to pound sand. Too bad, since China really does need to fix its banking system.

And why would anyone feel the need to take their business to Wall Street anymore? The financial wizards working there have shown they know how to turn gold into lead.

If Senators McCain and Obama are paying attention, then they should now know their economic plans are out the window. I don't think we have the money to do what they are talking about.

The U.S. economy is downsizing. We just aren't as rich as we thought we were.

I hope the US is too big to fail and someone will bail us out.

The only option now is for us to shut down imports & immigration, make exports exclusive to countries which we favor (i.e. Japan, England) and take care of our own business. It's time to temporarily shut down foreign trade so we can get our own system in order.
