Obama Sets Expectations

posted by Darren Gersh, Washington Bureau Chief at 4:49 PM on 11/05/08

Power Town Title GraphicLast night's victory speech by Barack Obama was historic. Not only was it the first time an African American has been elected president, it is also the first time the loser in the race seemed happier than the winner.

Seeing Barack Obama on stage in Chicago last night, you could almost sense in his eyes that the man had taken on the weight of the world. To be sure, the speech was uplifting. Yet, in the back of his mind, I was certain the words read something like this.

To the world: "Yes we can!"

To self: "Two wars! I have to figure out two wars at once!"

To the world: "Yes we can!"

To self: "That economic briefing says the economy could be the worst in 30 years, maybe more! What if this is a long, long recession?"

To the world: "Yes we can!"

To self: "The nation is broke!"

To the world: "Our climb will be steep. We may not get there in one year or even one term, but America – I have never been more hopeful than I am tonight that we will get there."

To self: "I hope that helps adjust expectations, but there are an awful lot of people in this park . . . .

Checkout www.rentaroomdc.com for great places to rent for inaugration.

And that may wind up being the easy part. The Kremlin(Medvedev conveniently even delayed his address) and Iran have already taken up their places. The next betting game for political pundits is to predict when Obamas hair will turn gray. While I contemplate my bet I am certain of the amount I will wager; 100% of my capital gains this year.

If I were a Sledge with Hammer Privileges

"
Dad, I now see that in another country it is popular to sell house with clause to rent back from new owner, clause to buy back at same price later if price goes up, clause for owner not to sell to other owner and clause to sublet. I also see that in Euro-Zone Claude has hammered down the tick on interest rates by 50 basis, but in England the central bank tick has been hammered down 150 basis points. Are the elected hammerers trying to get prices up long enough for close cronies to sell out before the next collapse?
"
"Your choice of words approaches atrocious, young financier. The word is hammerererers. Additionally, when the tick is being hammered by official government officials, it is not polite to call it a spade, let alone sledge hammer, young man, and when was the last time you wiped dust from your basketball net?"

"Sorry dear old dad! The foreigners are also avoiding foreclosure by renting out rooms to needy wounded veterans who had previously protected homeland from foreign politicians moving in for federally funded gourmet food-stamps. But we are not allowed to rent rooms in this country because of the association fees."

"Here again -- your choice of words. Association rules; not fees."

"The owners association owners charge fees to levy oppressive rules? Wow, that sounds like lucrative racket, thanks dad."

Clean out the garage son!

Yes, dear old Duffer
!

Yes indeed. I too noticed the weary Presidential mien. He didn't look drained but he did look full aware of both the moment and the task that lay ahead.

As much energy as John McCain undeniably possesses, I'm glad it's going to be the younger man to confront this mountain!
