The Magic of Magic Johnson

posted by Susie Gharib, Anchor at 3:36 PM on 11/18/08

Susie Gharib and Magic JohnsonI have a fun job. I get to interview lots of famous people--from the White House to Corporate America. But what a special treat today to interview Magic Johnson. I was talking with the legendary basketball star about his book: 32 Ways to be a Champion in Business (32 because that was the number on his Lakers jersey). We met at a Best Buy store in Manhattan -- Best Buy because Johnson is advising the consumer electronics store on how to be successful selling in urban, underserved communities.

So what did I think of Magic? Well, he’s smart. His book is full of solid business advice. He’s charismatic, personable, humble and he has a great laugh. And he’s tall -- 6-foot-9 -- he towered over me even though I was in 4-inch high heels. He also knows how to connect with people. Like the inscription he wrote in my copy of his book: “I hope all your dreams come true. Magic Johnson #32”. No wonder they call him Magic.

I'm impressed that you were impressed by Magic Johnson. I've always loved the guy. I loved his game when he was playing; his record of 9 NBA finals in 12 years is, in the modern era of basketball, nothing short of amazing. The way he handled the HIV thing, taking what was a devasting blow to his career and life, and through it all, prevailing, is a triumph of strength and personal courage. His business ability and drive is something I greatly admire. He had enough money to just go away, but he has chosen to participate in the push and pull of business, and I admire him for that. And, importantly, he is one of the few black athletes who have given, or even tried, to give back to the black community in a meaningful business sense. In that regard, he has truly put his money where his mouth is. He is a great guy, a remarkable guy. I would love to have the chance to meet him some day.

Saw the show on 11/20/2008. You were asking when will stocks stop falling. I believe the 200 day avg must fall below the 50 day average before stocks will see an uptick.
