2008's Gifts & Gadgets

posted by Scott Gurvey, New York Bureau Chief at 6:39 PM on 12/09/08

Photo of Scott GurveyIt’s the little stuff…. Stocking stuffers and gifts in the $100 and less category which are flying off the shelves this holiday season. That’s what the merchants are telling me as they discuss the top gadget items for this year’s gifts and gadgets series. The one big exception, and I do mean big, is flat screen televisions.

They are selling well in spite of economic hard times. One reason is that prices keep falling, you can get something decent for less than $1,000. Another is that people are motivated by the upcoming conversion to digital broadcast TV to get a new set capable of displaying the better pictures and playing the better sound. And last but perhaps not least, consumers figure since the can’t afford frequent nights out on the town, at least they’ll have a good TV for those stay-at-home evenings.

So, what are you buying this year?

One thing I will be buying is a videoconferencing software technology that will allow me to have a VTC from cell-tocell, PC-to-PC, or PC-to-cell with friends and family. And KTvid (www.ktvid.com) is having a intro sale now as well- 2 for 1.
