Image of Krystle RussinHave you checked out the light bulbs you are using? Helping the environment also helps your pockets.

According to the federal government's Energy Star website, you can save $30 on each bulb's lifetime by using energy efficient light bulbs. Look for bulbs marked Energy Star. You might also want to check out the tips for "choosing the right compact fluorescent light bulbs" offered by About.com. You'll also want to watch for discounts Home Depot and other home repair chains often offer for the bulbs.

This is the blog with the best personal response from readers. I am glad you understand my original point of view that a small thing, like buying bulbs, can make a big difference. If you are interested in learning more via Google, though I can't recall the info at the moment, there is one day a year where people across the country turn out their lights and save a LOT of energy combining their efforts!

Good tips, I am heading to Home Depot today.
Thanks.

Ms. Russin, These type of light blubs our great as well as items that our engery star as well. I move to the big island over 20yrs ago. In a part were there was NO ele. I built my own ele system that works off of solar and wind. If it were NOT for these items one could not enjoy life off grid as well. they do make a difference an truely do help keep things clearner. an like the person said the more we learn an do to protect our world the better we all will be for it. have a nice day. respectfully your,s nolan.

Hello Krystle,

Thanks for these tips and links!!

I use a generic spiral-type integrated compact fluorescent lamp, 23 watts, with 2700k color temperature and they are just as bright as a 60 watt incandescent bulb. Only one out of the 15 I purchased has expired because it was in a hand held garage lamp when yours truly was bumbling around and the force of gravity got the best of us. So, the others are all just over a year old and working fine. So enough testimonial, I found another link about CFL on Wikipedia.

instead of worrying about light bulbs which are ok how about the VW 4 cyl. diesel which gets 57 mpg.its already on the road but the big oil companys and car manufacturers dont like it. How about getting the semi trucks off the road which are inefficient and dangerous even with the strict guidelines we have on them. We pay for the highways and they tear them up. What about giving tax incentives for keeping your car longer instead of sending it to the junkyard and car manufacturers make them last longer. we need to regulate the big companys that get too powerful. how about a government subsidy to put a solar panel on every roof in the united States. I admit its a tall order.Bring back railroads 1 or 2 engines pull 100 cars which can carry250000 pounds each. how many semi trucks does it take to haul that much.Do the math. How about planting natural hardwood trees in every open space. I think that would be fun and challenging. Im with Barrack Obama we have to take back our country and start making objective logical decisions based on verifiable facts and information not on political agendas.Trees supply oxygen take in carbon dioxide hold the soil regulate temperatures.do you want your grandchildren to live in a desert. we need to wake up.
