It seems somehow fitting to write this as the President is visiting China. After all, I am old enough to have had my mother tell me: "Eat your food. People in China are starving."
Well, it appears that here at home we have too many people who eat far too much and too many people without enough to eat.
According to the Agriculture Department, 17 million U.S. families had trouble finding enough food over the course of the year. By the way, one-third of the country is also obese.
That's 72 million people who have too much to eat and 49 million who may not have enough to eat.
Beyond the humanitarian issues, why does this matter?
It matters, because it is difficult to see how we can remain a competitive nation if we are saddled with huge health bills. The more we spend on preventable diseases associated with obesity, the less we have to invest so we can compete with the rest of the world.
And then there are the one million children who go hungry in this country and another 11 million or so who live in families where food sometimes runs short.
Can we compete with China and India if one out of five of our children worry about going hungry at night?

Internal struggles withing the Mob will keep us all safe. The more the Mob mushrooms, the merrier the mel'ee.
Obesity may have more to do with lack of exercise and poor food choices than too much food. We have a lot more jobs that restrict physical activity than jobs that require it now, and yet I see only advertisements for food way too high-calorie for someone on a desk job. Healthy food is still cast as a fringe topic, like alternative medicine, although both deserve more attention.
You do know that we as a nation dispose of enough surplus food to feed all of those hungry people, right? Part of it is gratuitous waste, and part of it is the politics of agricultural subsidies and price manipulation. And yet we are asked to buy more food to donate. Perhaps if we want to be serious about competition, we should try managing our vast resources more efficiently.
Oh, and Robert, don't you remember Hollywood Hulk Hogan abandoned the NWO to do a reality TV show about his felonius family years ago?
Seriously, I envision this "New World Order" as a cross between the book of Revelation and Mad Max. Oceans boil, ex-investment bankers branded with the mark of the beast roam the Earth, and Mel Gibson brings us another Thunderdome.
Tell me, will the hundreds of warring and quarreling peoples and nations of the world all suddenly wake up one day and assimilate into the NWO? France and Belgium both had major riots in past year (the report of the closing of Brussels by rioting dairy men was amusing to me and apropos). I see nothing but continued conflict everywhere, which makes me gravely doubt the establishment of any lasting "World Order".
