PBS' Nightly Business Report Launches Year-Long Retirement Series
"Get Your Finances Ready for Retirement" Begins
May 12, 2008
Miami, FL (April 21, 2008) -- As 78 million baby boomers begin to retire, PBS' Nightly Business Report is working to help them manage their money. NBR is doing this in a special series of reports called "Get Your Finances Ready for Retirement" that will appear on the program two Mondays each month, starting May 12, 2008.
Made possible by a grant from the FINRA Investor Education Foundation and produced in association with U.S. News & World Report, this year-long series is aimed at persons who are within five years of retirement or have recently retired. Its objective is to help them make their finances last through their retirement years, which could run far longer than they expect.
"Personal finance issues have always been a vital component of our programming," said Rodney Ward, Executive Editor/Senior Vice President, Nightly Business Report. "But with so many millions of boomers retiring all at once, this series could have a bigger impact, and could affect more people, than anything we've done before."
The series will kick off with segments on the following subjects:
- Getting Started: What You Need to Consider About Retirement (May 12th)
- How Much Money Do You Need To Retire? (May 19th)
Then on May 26, NBR will devote its entire Memorial Day program to these and other pre-retirement financial subjects, including: When Should You Begin to Collect Social Security?
"Nightly Business Report is an ideal vehicle to reach this important demographic with information that could prove vital to their financial security in retirement," said John Gannon, Executive Director of the FINRA Investor Education Foundation. "The financial challenges awaiting boomers -- who will have greater personal responsibility for managing their nest eggs to last a lifetime than any previous generation of American retirees -- are substantial."
This series will be NBR's biggest multi-media effort to date. Throughout the series, monthly companion articles will be featured in U.S. News & World Report and also on the magazine's website, www.usnews.com. Then, after their broadcast, the 26 reports and two half-hour specials will be available for viewing on-demand on the special series website (to be accessed from NBR's own website at pbs.org/nbr). The segments will also be made available as podcasts for viewing on mobile devices.
"U.S. News has a long history of helping consumers make the most important decisions of their lives -- and what could be more important than planning for an managing the retirement years of the baby boomers?" said Tim Smart, managing editor, U.S. News & World Report. "This collaboration with NBR will complement our existing coverage of retirement issues, which include an annual guide and our Best Place to Retire feature in the magazine and on the web."
