Open For Business An NBR Special Series

NBR examines how different
companies approach diversity
in the workplace.

The changing face of America is having an impact on the way corporations do business and train their employees. In this special holiday edition, NBR will examine how three very different companies, in three very different industries, approach diversity in the workplace.

In the technology field, we profile Xerox, one of the few Fortune 500 companies to have a female CEO, Anne Mulcahy. We'll talk with her about how the company benefits from a diverse workforce.

In the retail industry, we profile Seattle-based department store chain, Nordstrom. Not only does the company boast a higher than average percentage of female and African-American managers and workers in its industry, it also has a commitment to diversity in selecting its suppliers.

Lastly, we profile Denny's, a restaurant chain that completely overhauled its corporate approach to diversity after a discrimination lawsuit raised its profile in a way it might not have wanted. Denny's has received national recognition as an excellent example of a turnaround in this area.

We will also talk with two experts in the field of diversity ... professors from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard University. The discussion will focus on the corporate cost of diversity, and of not having a diverse workforce; what makes a good diversity program; the challenges and problems of establishing and managing a diverse workforce, and the role corporate leaders play in that process; and diversity as an integral part of the whole.
