The Markets At Midyear

Monday, July 04, 2005

If one word could be used to describe the course of investments over the past six months, it might be "paradox." While short-term interest rates went up, long-term interest rates went in the other direction. And even as real estate prices kept rallying, some other "hard assets" -- such as gold -- experienced weakness.

Nightly Business Report will try to make sense out of this confusing situation in a July 4 holiday special, "The Markets At Midyear." Co-anchored by Paul Kangas and Susie Gharib, this roundup will look at the year-to-date performance of many different types of investments.

The program will begin with a review of stock market activity by Correspondent Suzanne Pratt. Midwest Bureau Chief Diane Eastabrook will look at what happened to oil and other commodities, and Correspondent Jeff Yastine will examine the state of real estate in markets across the country.

Paul Kangas will review second quarter mutual fund activity with Morningstar's Christine Benz. Susie Gharib will check in with three Wall Street analysts. In an extended interview, she will see what they expect for stocks and the economy over the balance of the year.

For a more long-term view, Paul will talk with noted investment expert Jeremy Siegel of the Wharton School of Business. Siegel will discuss important findings that he made in the course of putting together his new book, The Future for Investors.

So if you're looking to add some fireworks to your portfolio, the place to start is with NBR's holiday special on July 4!
