"China Century of Change"

Monday, September 05, 2005

A look at how the Asian nation is remaking itself and the challenges it faces.

More than one billion people call this Communist country home. It's the world's fourth largest country and second largest economy, after the United States. In a special follow-up to a series of reports that aired in June, NBR Washington Bureau Chief Darren Gersh takes another look at China's economy through the eyes of its people. In this holiday program, the focus is on people - profiling different members of Chinese society and the roles they play in their nation's changing economy.

Earlier this summer, NBR broadcast a series of reports looking at how the giant Asian nation is remaking itself and the challenges it faces.

Among the stories covered:

  • Chinese products are now on store shelves all over the world. The country is now moving to make its home-grown brands just as international.
  • The country is known for assembling high-tech goods so can it make the shift into innovating and designing them?
  • Most Americans see the China that is Beijing and Shanghai - both booming cities with massive growth underway. But there is another China, one that is less affluent, less successful on the world stage. We take a look at the "other" China.
  • We look at how China is reforming its banking system with an eye towards moving from a state-run system to more of a free economy model.
  • Trade tensions are growing between the U.S. and China. But most Americans only hear the U.S.' side of that story. We look at trade from China's view.
