India's Promise Travelog
Tuesday, May 01, 2007
| What
challenges will India face as it becomes a major player in the global
economy? That question is the focus of "India's Promise"
-- an NBR series that will air the week of May 21st and an NBR special
that will air on Memorial Day, May 28th.
I’m Dana
Greenspon, a field producer and a member of the NBR reporting team
doing the legwork for "India's Promise." Starting April
7th, I’ll be spending more than two weeks in India along with
my colleagues, Darren Gersh and Steve Washington. I volunteered
to bring you this travelog documenting my experiences in India.

to see the links to my blog entries as well as the digital photos
I’ll be taking along the way. I hope you enjoy this look at
India through my eyes. |

between the U.S. and India, there may be a slight delay between when I write
the entry and when you see it posted to the site. |

Day
Fourteen
By the time you read this, our crew will be back in the United States,
having spent 14 days gathering material in India. I suppose, then,
that this is the hardest entry to write. The last in any series carries
with it the expectation that it will tie everything…+Read

Day
Thirteen
Thirteen days in, one more to go, and until today I had no issues
with crime in India. In fact, I felt safer walking through some of
the slums here than I do walking through my neighborhood in Washington,
DC. But today, on our day off, I was caught…+Read

Day
Twelve
The other day, one of our interviews told us a story that had been
circulating about a comment Indian Commerce Minister Kamal Nath recently
made. “We find the Europeans fighting for a 35-hour week,”
Mr. Nath said, “and we in India are fighting for a... +Read

When talking about India’s booming economy, people often compare
India and China. Given that both developing economies are growing
at 8 or 9 percent a year, I think the inclination to make that comparison
is understandable. But comparing the two... +Read

Ten
I have received a few comments about the blog, and I would like to
clear up a few misunderstandings. First, and most importantly, the
content you read here is not the NBR series & special “India’s
Promise.” This is a subjective travelog, an account of... +Read

Today, in Bangalore, we found the first cup of coffee that met with
Darren and Steve’s approval – or at least came close.
Up to this point, they had encountered disappointment after disappointment
and were a bit downtrodden by the fact that Starbucks... +Read

Days
Seven & Eight
This weekend brought us to the end of the first chapter of our trip
and to the beginning of chapter two, as we packed up in Delhi and
moved on to Bangalore. Seeing as my first blog entry highlighted India
as a country of contrasts, I guess it’s only fitting that...

Day six was the dance of the cabinet ministers. We interviewed both
the Finance Minister and the Commerce Minister, the latter interview
nearly resulting in an international incident over the relocation
of a chair and screen. In setting... +Read

I’d like to go on record and say that yogurt is magic. Three
bowls of the stuff (along with some non-prescription medication),
and I’m almost 100 percent again. You’d think a girl with
a bachelor’s degree in molecular biochemistry would have a more...

I am about to get a little personal. I intended to write an entry
about our return to the Delhi slum or our four-hour drive through
the night to Agra, but my circumstances have changed slightly, taking
this entry in a somewhat different direction. However, by... +Read

What do you get when you combine a packed schedule with Delhi roads
and traffic? A loooooong day. Today we encountered another unique
Delhi phenomenon: There are no street signs. Or, as Sanjay says, when
there are street signs, they are wrong 90 percent...

Driving from shoot to shoot in India, we have a lot of time to discuss
not only what we just saw or heard, but also how those elements fit
into the broader picture of India and how our understanding of the
country is developing or changing. Today’s main discussions...

One
Today, our first day in India, was a study in contrasts, and what
is in many ways the face of modern India: a booming economy and growing
middle class, amidst an immense proportion of the population that
still lives on less than $2 a day. I had read... +Read
