Amber Waves
Amber Waves is a journal published by the U.S. Departmetn of Agriculture. This links to a feature published in the November 2008 edition of the journal. The feature is titled, "Market Failures: When the Invisible Hand Gets Shaky." It includes a discussion of the Mississippi River and the environmental impact of the hypoxia is causes in the Gulf of Mexico.
Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta
The Atlanta Fed is part of the U.S. central banking system. This links to an article published in the first quarter 2008 issue of the Atlanta Fed's Econ South journal. The article is titled, "The Lower Mississippi River: The Flow of Trade."
The National Academies
The National Academies advise the federal government on medical and scientific issues. This links to an October 16, 2007 press release issued by the National Academies. The press release is titled, "Stronger EPA Leadership Needed to Improve Water Quality in Mississippi River."
National Hydropower Association (NHA)
NHA is "a nonprofit national association dedicated exclusively to advancing the interests of the hydropower industry." The NHA website offers facts and news about hydro power.
U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)
This links to Agricultural Transportation data tracked by the USDA. Specifically, it links to "Average Weekly Mississippi River Barge Rates."
U.S. Geological Survey (USGS)
The USGS "serves the Nation by providing reliable scientific information to describe and understand the Earth." This links to a section of the website titled, "About the Upper Mississippi River System." The section explains why the Mississippi is " the best example of a multi-purpose river in the United States."
Xcel Energy
Xcel Energy operates a hydroelectric power plant on the Misssissippi River near Minneapolis, Minnesota at St. Anthony Falls. The plant is called Hennepin Island. This links to information about the plant.
