Last Word-AC As A Bird Flu Fighter

Wednesday, February 15, 2006

SUSIE GHARIB: And finally tonight, this could be a new way to fight bird flu: just turn on your air conditioning! South Korean electronics giant LG is about to start marketing an air conditioner with a filter made from an enzyme that`s found in the pickled cabbage dish called kimchee. In Asia, kimchee is viewed as a miracle food and some people believe its pungent pack of peppers, garlic, and ginger could protect against avian flu. LG says it will sell the air conditioners in China and southeast Asia. And Paul, one selling point is that while the filter may spread kimchee`s enzymes, it won`t spread its distinctive and unmistakable aroma.

KANGAS: At that rate, those bird flu filters should be flying off the shelves.

GHARIB: That`s a good way of putting it.
