American Stock Exchange

In 2006, the American Stock Exchange (AMEX) had a domestic market capitalization of $283 billion. In that same year, the value of its shares traded was $601 billion.

Chicago Board Options Exchange

The Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) is a trading exchange for equity options and index/ETF options. In 2006, the CBOE traded a volume of 391 million equity option contracts and 284 million idex/ETF option contracts.

Commodity Futures Trading Commission

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) is an independent agency of the U.S. government. It's mission "is to protect protect market users and the public from fraud, manipulation, and abusive practices related to the sale of commodity and financial futures and options, and to foster open, competitive, and financially sound futures and option markets."

CME Group

The CME Croup is the result of the 2007 merger of the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) and the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME). In 2006, the CBOT had the second highest volume (118 million contracts traded) of all global commodity futures trading boards, while the CME traded 17 million contracts. FINRA is an independent regulator of securities firms that do business in the U.S.

Nasdaq Stock Market

In 2006, the Nasdaq had the third largest domestic market capitalization ($3,865 billion) of all global equity exchanges. In that same year, the value of its shares traded was $11,807 billion.

New York Mercantile Exchange

In 2006, the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX) had the highest volume (179 million contracts traded) of all global commodity futures trading boards. Go to this site for energy and metals prices.

NYSE Euronext

In 2007, the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE Group) aquired Euronext, one of Europe's biggest equity markets. In 2006, NYSE had the largest domestic market capitalization ($15,421 billion) of all global equity exchanges, and the value of its shares traded was $21,789 billion. In 2006, Euronext had a domestic market capitalization of $3,708 billion, and the value of its shares traded was $3,853 billion.

U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission

The mission of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) "is to protect maintain fair, orderly, and efficient markets, and facilitate capital formation." The agency regulates equity markets in the U.S.

Bankruptcy Courts

This portion of the Federal Judiciary's website offers information about U.S. Bankruptcy Code and filing for bankruptcy. It includes links to bankruptcy claim forms.

Bureau of Economic Analysis

The Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) is a division of the U.S. Department of Commerce. The site includes national statistics, like GDP and corporate profits, and regional statistics, like state GDP. In additional international account data, like balance of payments is offered.

Bureau of Labor Statistics

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) is a division of the U.S. Department of Labor. The site offers data on U.S. inflation, consumer spending, wages, employment, productivity, and more.

Department of Treasury

The U.S. Department of Treasury manages Federal financies, collects taxes, manages government accounts, supervises banks, enforces finance laws, and advises the President on financial, monetary, economic, trade, and tax policy.

Economic Indicators.gov

Economic Indicators.gov is a service of the Economics and Statistics Administration, which is part of the U.S. Department of Commerce. The website compiles daily releases of key economic indicators, like new residential construction, from the Bureau of Economic Analysis and the U.S. Census Bureau.

EDGAR

The EDGAR database is a service of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. It includes all the statements, reports, and forms companies are required to file with the Federal Government. Use EDGAR to review a company's annual and quarterly reports, etc.

Energy Information Administration

The Energy Information Administration (EIA) is an agency of the U.S. Department of Energy. The site contains energy statistics, including information on petroleum reserves as well as updates on retail gasoline prices.

Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) is an independent agency that insures deposits, ecamines and supervises financial institutions, and manages receiverships. The website includes a section designed to protect consumers.

Federal Open Market Committee

The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) is the policy making arm of the Federal Reserve. The committee sets the federal funds rate, which determines wider interest rates. The website includes a meeting calendar, statements, and minutes.

The Federal Reserve

The Federal Reserve is the central bank of the United States. The links to the page on the Fed's website featuring statistics releases and historical data.

Federal Trade Commission

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is charged with protecting consumers and regulating competition. The website includes a consumer complaint form.

Government Accountability Office

The mission of the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) "is to help improve the performance and assure the accountability of the federal government for the benefit of the American people."

Internal Revenue Service

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is a division of the U.S. Department of Treasury. The IRS collects taxes and enforces tax law. Among other things, the website contains tax forms and a system for filing taxes online.

Office of Management and Budget

The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) is an agency of the White House. It helps the President of the United states prepare and supervise the federal budget.

Office of Travel & Tourism Industries

The Office of Travel & Tourism Industries (OTTI) is part of the U.S. Department of Commerce. The OTTI's website offers statistics on U.S. travel, both inbound and outbound.

Office of the U.S. Trade Representative

The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative is charged with negotiating trade agreements, resolving trade disputes, and participating in global trade policy organizations. The website contains information on current trade agreements and trade sectors and regions.

Small Business Administration

The U.S. Small Business Administration is an independent federal agency that "helps Americans start, build and grow businesses."

Social Security Administration

The U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA) manages America's Social Security programs, including Medicare, Disability, and Supplemental Security Income.

In 2006, the Frankfurt Stock Exchange (Deutsche Boerse) had the eighth largest domestic market capitalization ($1,638 billion) of all global equity exchanges. In that same year, the value of its shares traded was $2,742 billion.

Hong Kong Stock Exchange

In 2006, the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (Hong Kong Exchanges) had the sixth largest domestic market capitalization ($1,715 billion) of all global equity exchanges.

International Monetary Fund

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is an international organization that promotes monetary cooperation, exchange stability, and orderly exchange arrangements; fosters economic growth; and provides temporary financial assistance to countries to help ease balance of payments adjustment. The website contains country info and economic data and statistics.

London Stock Exchange

In 2006, the London Stock Exchange had the fourth largest domestic market capitalization ($3,794 billion) of all global equity exchanges. In that same year, the value of its shares traded was $7,583 billion.

Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development

The Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Developement (OECD) is "an international organisation helping governments tackle the economic, social and governance challenges of a globalised economy." The United States is one of its 30 member nations. The website offers statistics and economic analysis.

Tokyo Stock Exchange

In 2006, the Tokyo Stock Exchange had the second largest domestic market capitalization ($4,614 billion) of all global equity exchanges. In that same year, the value of its shares traded was $5,825 billion.

Toronto Stock Exchange

In 2006, the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX Group) had the seventh largest domestic market capitalization ($1,701 billion) of all global equity exchanges.

The World Bank

The World Bank "helps to improve the safety net systems of developing countries through technical assistance, knowledge dissemination and direct lending." The website contains national and global economic statistics, policy research reports, and more.

World Federation of Exchanges

The World Federation of Exchanges "is the trade organization for regulated securites and derivative markets, settlement institutions and related clearing houses, and their diverse services to capital markets." Its members include all of the world's major stock exchanges.

World Trade Organization (WTO)

The WTO is "the only global international organization dealing with the rules of trade between nations." In addition to offering information about trade disputes, the WTO website offers trade statistics and economic research and analysis.

Knowledge@Wharton

The Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania publishes Knowledge@Wharton, an online business journal. Registration is required to access the articles.

The Manufacturing Institute

The Manufacturing Institute is the research and education arm of the National Association of Manufactures (NAM), the trade organization representing U.S. manufacturers.

Mortgage Bankers Association

The Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA) is a trade organization representing the real estate finance industry. The MBA's website includes research, forecasts, issue papers, and more.

National Association of Realtors

The National Association of Realtors (NAR) is a trade organization representing real estate agents. This links to the "Research" section of the NAR website, which offers up-to-date information about the U.S. housing market.

NRF Foundation

The NRF Foundation is the education and research arm of the National Retail Federation (NRF), a trade association representing key U.S. retail goods and services firms.

Stigler Center for the Study of the Economy and the State

The Stigler Center is part of the University of Chicago's Graduate School of Business. This links to an archive of all the working papers produced by the center. One of the more recent papers is titled, "Who Blows the Whistle on Corporate Fraud."
