WORK IN PROGRESS - The New Workers
Are
America's newest workers - those graduating high school and college -
really prepared to become successful members of the workforce? As part
of the "Work
in Progress" special, NBR Washington Bureau Chief Darren
Gersh reports on one California high school that's reorganizing its
curriculum to make sure its students can contribute to what has become
a knowledge economy.

Through its partnerships in communities across the nation, the Bill
& Melinda Gates Foundation is "committed to raising the high
school graduation rate and helping all students—regardless of
race or family income—graduate as strong citizens ready for college
and work."
- Edutopia
The Edutopia website was created by the George Lucas Educational Foundation
and is designed as "information and inspiration for innovative
teaching in K-12 schools." This links to Stanford Professor Linda
Darling-Hammond's page on the website. The page includes links to dozens
of articles and other materials that Darling-Hammond has authored for
Edutopia.
- Hillsdale
High School
Hillsdale High in San Mateo, California is profiled in Darren Gersh's
report. The website includes information about Hillsdale's Smaller Learning
Communities (SLCs), which were developed as part of an intensive redesign
of the school's curriculum.
- National
Center for Education Statistics (NCES)
NCES is the primary federal entity for collecting and analyzing data
related to education.
- Partnership
for 21st Century Skills
The Partnership is an "advocacy organization focused on infusing 21st
century skills into education." The site includes related articles,
an educational framework, as well as information about various state
initiatives.
