India's a rising star in the global economy, but rapid growth has created challenges for the nation. In this series of reports that leads up to a special edition of NBR, Washington Bureau Chief Darren Gersh explores India's future and its challenges. Part 2 focuses on India's water problem.

    The Department of Drinking Water Supply is part of India's Ministry of Rural Developent. The ministry's website offers data about the country's drinking water situation. In addition, it also offers resources to assist the various Indian states with their efforts to improve the quality of their drinking water.
  • India's Planning Commission
    The Planning Commission of the Government of India determines priorities for the most efficient utilization of the nation's resources. The agency's Deputy Chairman, Montek Singh Ahluwalia, is interviewed in Darren Gersh's report.
  • Rainwaterharvesting.org
    Rainwaterharvesting.org is the website of the Center for Science and Environment, a non-governmental organization based in New Delhi. The group promotes "the revival of tradtional system of water harvesting." This links to the groups analysis of the Yamuna River's pollution problems.
  • The World Bank
    The World Bank "helps to improve the safety net systems of developing countries through technical assistance, knowledge dissemination and direct lending." This links to a World Bank report titled, "India's Water Economy: Bracing for a Turbulent Future."
  • Yamuna Action Plan
    The Yamuna Action Plan is a project of India's Ministry of Environment & Forests. It is a plan "for water pollution abatement and conservation of the river Yamuna" in India. The Yamuna is profiled in Darren Gersh's report.
