In many ways, the Chinese American communities are still under the
similar kind of discrimination they experienced 100 years ago.
Whenever there is a political struggle, the politicians always find the
weakest group to crash. In the minority populations in America,
Hispanic and Blacks both created huge political infuluence. But since
Chinese (or even Asian-American in general) don't have a strong
heritage of participating in the political process, they are the easy
target. When the American government decide to tight up the
immigration status and visa process from the foreigners to enter the
country after 9-11, it is the Asians who were affected the most.
Mexicans and other Latinos can still cross the broaders with much
better luck. Chinese were never causing any trouble to the American
public, they try to fit in as much as they could. You probably noticed
that only Chinese liked to adopt English names as their new given name
(so that people can remember them easily.)In most white American's
mind, Chinese-American will always be Chinese rather than American.
Sad, sad, sad...
