Hey, Kella. People are contradictory things by nature. If you come here
in Russia I would admit you may be quite disappointed. But if you say
something bad about my land and my people... I'll do my best to assure
you it is not true! The truth is that, as I can see from the
discussions, it is really very little known about Russia in America.

Subject: View of Russia by other nations From:Mike Aryunov Date: 08 Aug 2002 2:36 AM
Hello everybody,That Americans (I still believe not all of them) or
other nations don't wantknow about Russia or any other country anyway
it's their own business. Butwhen someone starts spreading outrageous
lies I begin to lose my temper! Ihave not read American newspapers for
a long time, but as to European press,e.g. Netherlandish, there's a lot
of bullshit for that matter. In the beginning Americans and other
Western people applaudedGorbachov's reforms because they believed that
he would quickly make out ofRussians people with a Western way of
thinking. It's a mere illusion. It didnot succeed even with less
numerous and less stubborn people. Now when theseexpectations have
vanished, the view of Russia and its people has becomealmost completely
negative. And I suppose that our national way of thinkingis the very
stumbling block. Giving up national spirit is a nation's death. When our
respected guests come to Russia they are inclined to regardfeatures
which constitute the very essence of our national character only inthe
negative sense. For example: I heard many times Western
peoplecomplaining about 'unobligance' of Russians. That is if a Western
businessperson made an appointment with a Russian partner he or she
expects him tobe on time at the proper place. With Russians one can not
be sure ofsomething at all. It is not completely right. Our businessmen
can be as (oreven more) reponsible as their foreign partners. However
this notion may bepartly correct. But you should understand that
Russian nation was raised ina country of such a vast size and such a
harsh climat where nobody can becompletely sure of one's intentions
success. This idea has deep roots in ourminds. It's the matter of
survival in this country. Thus when someoneregards us as impractical I
would recommend him to live here five years ormore just to taste the
way of living. Most foreigners who lived here enoughlong have
completely quitted trying to alter Russians. They have ratherchanged
themselves. This country is invincible. It recasts every peopleliving
here at its own discretion.
