If you're wondering how to get your 8-year-old to quit sucking her thumb my experience has been that it's best to just let her quit on her own. The more you make a negative issue out of it the more she will need to suck her thumb for comfort. I quit sucking my thumb when I got old enough to worry about what my friends would think if they saw me. My father was on me constantly about getting it out of my mouth and that only made me more frustrated. In my opinion, time will take care of the situation.

I agree with Jane. I sucked two of my fingers until I was nine or ten, mostly at night to fall asleep. I eventually just quit on my own. If my parents had made a big deal out of it, I probably would have done it longer due to stress. Don't worry about it, she'll stop on her own. The most I would do is teach her to wash her hands often to keep from getting sick from germs. Good luck.

I would not feel bad about the thumb sucking I did for 12 yrs. and the only thing I would worry about is that the child is not lacking in something. Some times the child does this for security.
