Hello to parents who read this message. I came on to this site to find
some help for my 8 year-old son. He is basically a loveable boy, pretty
obedient but somewhat absent-minded on things which he has been told to
do. He is so easily distracted. I have had comments from his teacher
that he is dreamy in class though he is not a problem student. His
grades are mediocre. His teacher tells me that he is not the
below-average kind of student but he definitely is not performing to
his full potential all because he lacks the challenge and drive. He is
clearly capable of better grades and more responsibilities. I know he
felt very disappointed when he was not chosen to be a school prefect
but I have talked it over with him about it. I would be very glad if
anyone of you out there can offer any tips on how to help him out of
this rut.

I have a son who sounds very similar. He has the ability to do
average++ work but has the tendency to get distracted or to drift off
in class. We are amazed at what he comes out with when given the
incentive but this usually involves a reward system or something gained
by doing it (like a toy or extra playtime). His teacher suggested that
we give him time limits at home to make him more aware of completing
tasks within a certain period of time. It can be quite frustrating when
you know they are capable of more but don't have the motivation to do
it. I am looking for suggestions all the time. So if anyone has any
ideas or resourceful web sites please tell us about them.
