What do you think is appropriate for your child to do for homework? How long should it take them? What are alternatives that you can think of? Are you for or against it? I'm interested to know because this year as my oldest daughter entered third grade I find we are swamped!! I would like to hear what you think about this topic!

Hi, as for what the child SHOULD be doing as regards homework, I think that is up to the teachers. They usually base it on lessons learned in the classroom, to reinforce learning. The NEA website says that children in the lower grades should spend from 20-30 minutes or so on homework, and I would say that it shouldn't take more than 45 minutes. My son is in third grade, and I think he spends an average amount of time on homework. If your child is "swamped," perhaps you could ask the teacher about it. At our Back to School night recently, the teacher went over such things as how much time homework should take, etc.
