I don't have any information for you, but would really be interested in anything you've learned. My daughter is 19 months old and exhibits similar behavior. Across the boards, she seems fine, but she just doesn't walk to talk yet.

I would be interested to know if your child has had chronic ear infections. Because of scar tissue that can build up speech and language can be affected. Check with your pediatrician or health department in your area. They may be able to refer you to a source that has answers for you.

Heather, your first step is to have your pediatrian have a hearing test done. Then if that is ok, you can contact your areas early intervention program. They will come to your home and evaluate your son. If he shows a 25% delay in language, you will qualify to have a speech therapist to come to your home once a week or how many times they determine his needs to be. This happened to my 3yr old son. He wasn't talking at 18 months and showed a delay that he was able to get a speech therapist once a week. He finally said mama and dada at 27 months. This after he had 9 months of therapy. He is now in a preschool that is helping him to talk and sign. He has a vocabulary of about 90 words. Most have to be interpretted by me or his dad but he has come such along way. He still has years of therapy to go but I'm glad we got help early. We don't have a reason for his delay but it could be several things. The early intervention and therapies are at no cost to you. Good luck. Please feel free to e-mail me with any questions or to talk to someone with a simular problem. Bev

My son is 29 months and is still only babbling. I am getting concerned. I have decided that if things don't change by the end of this month (he will be 2 1/2), I will definately set up an appointment to have him evaluated. I too am looking forward to just hearing him speak to me.

My son doesn't talk either. I'm planning to take him to Dr. Is there any improvement with your daughter? My son seems to be able to hear o.k.

I feel if a child is not speaking at all by 1 and half, you should get him or her evaluated to rule out any serious problems. many children dont talk until 2 or even 3 but you dont want to ignore a problem that may be able to be helped with proper educating. If your child gets along and socializes with children her age, has no funny quirks( like hand or arm flapping, or constant jumping, or bad eye contact) then odds are she's just a late talker. But if you notice any of the above, contact someone in an early intervention center and get an evaluation. I know it's hard to imagine that anything can be wrong with your child. Believe me I know, but they found that my son had very mild pdd(progressive developemental delay) and he started a pre-k program at 2 yrs old. N0w at 4 he talks alot and is saying more and more everyday. If I had ignored it he might not be doing so well. Good luck I hope I helped out a little
