My two-year-old daughter is very shy around adults. When someone says 'hi' or asks her a question, she usually doesn't respond and will hide behind me or my husband. I don't know whether to answer for her, encourage her to respond, or just leave the question hanging. I'm not sure how to help her at these times (or if I should try). She's very verbal at home.

My son who is 5 years of age is quite shy. He seem to have difficulty speaking to adults, he will somtimes hide behind me, stick his finger in his ear or he just will not answer. I am not sure what to do. Often times I try to encourage him to speak up.
