I think a lot of us are busy planning our summer vacations now that the
weather is beginning to get warm. I have found that travelling with
children adds a whole new dimension to the trip and the destination. I
would love to hear from some other parents about their travel
experiences with family-friendly spots. I know there are good websites
on the topic but you can't beat personal experience. Do you have any
good tips on where to go and how to keep them occupied until you get
there?

I'm sure there are a lot of personal family variables, like where you
live, your budget, how many kids, their ages and personalities, the
weather, but, in general we have great success with doing things
outside (like camping at state parks, picnics, beaches) combined with
short inside "sightseeing" type things. Anything with water is a huge
hit, as well as time to do regular things like movies and eating at new
places. We live on the Gulf Coast and are so well placed to get to
lots of things and also don't have huge crowds--a pretty big must for
keeping everyone happy. As for car rides, as long as my 4 1/2 year old
has someone dedicated to playing with him--imaginary games, making toys
come alive, I Spy, counting car colors, he and everyone stay pretty
happy. Group singing, kid's music tapes and books on tapes have all
made trips relatively wonderful experiences for us. Also, we've never
forced anyone to stay anywhere they didn't want to be in the car,
allowing for bending rules a bit and breaks. Rest areas are nice for
this, quick picnics and leg stretching.

I always try to get our two something new to do. Nothing extravagent,
just a new book or crayons or a puzzle that they could do on their
laps. Even a new toy (again, something small) can keep them occupied
for longer than you might think. And I have certain things that they
only get to play with in the car, so the novelty of the trip is almost
as exciting as the destination. Of course there are always plenty of
snacks and breaks to get out and stretch. and imagination, color
searches and counting games.
