Reviewing 1997

As Congress enters the second session of the 105th Congress, we look back at the first year. Through the eyes of our Congressional freshmen and our exploration of campaign finance abuses, we examine what was learned, what was achieved and what is left to be done.

Campaigns Under Scrutiny
Although the Senate has suspended its investigation into campaign finance abuses, the House committee, chaired by Republican Dan Burton of Indiana, continues to examine the Clinton White House's fund-raising. Click here for the latest on the Money Trail.

Freshmen Forums
Over the course of last year, we hosted a weekly forum with two new members of Congress. Click here to review the full list of past forums. Or read through our last Forum which featured Reps. Mike Pappas (R-NJ) and Ellen Tauscher (D-CA) discussing the First Amendment and campaign reform.

On The Job: Year One
One year into their first terms, both Congressman Jay Johnson (D-WI) and Representative Kay Granger have developed their legislative personalities.

Rep. Johnson has focused on his local constituencies. Some of his notable moments involved joining President Clinton at the White House to congratulate the Green Bay Packers on their Super Bowl victory, launching his Web site and his freshman diary entries.

Congresswoman Granger has been more of a Washington player, first by becoming Assistant Majority Whip under Tom DeLay (R-TX), and later by appearing with Newt Gingrich at events and taking a primary role in the balanced budget debate.
