July '97
Six months into their first term in the House of Representatives, both Congressman Jay Johnson and Congresswoman Kay Granger have begun to delve into the legislative arena.
Representative Kay Granger (R-TX) has already scored two legislative victories in the past month. First her proposal to allow the $500 per child tax credit to be used in a tax-free educational savings account was incorporated by Ways and Means Chairman Bill Archer (R-TX) into the House's tax cut proposal. Secondly, she also worked with colleagues on the Appropriations Committee to reinstate funding the F-16 fighter jet program, a key to Fort Worth's economy. With Lockheed-Martin based in her district, the F-16 contract could have jeopardized 11,000 jobs.Web surfers can find her site at http://www.house.gov/granger/.
Congressman Johnson (D-WI)
has also been making his mark on the floor of Congress. In addition
to his work on the Agriculture Committee and its influential Dairy Subcommittee,
Johnson has also introduced the Pay Check Fairness Act of 1997. This
proposal would force business to disclose what it pays employees and
make it easier for employees to bring suit if their employer is paying
a lower wage to women for equal work. The proposal is a key part of
the House Democrats "Families First" agenda.
