A question from Sally Cauthern of Princeton, NJ:
What has been the impact of the leadership fight within the GOP? Has it impacted either Members' ability to get work done? And I was wondering what work you had done on this issue, Congressman Pappas? Did you know about this rebellion?
Rep. Pappas responds:
A great deal of the news accounts on this issue have dealt with rumors
of what may have occurred. I was in New Jersey when much of this came to
light and probably read many of the same news accounts that you did. I
am committed to focusing my efforts on communicating the positive
aspects of the tax relief package that the Republicans have worked so
hard for on behalf of the American people. This should be a time that
we concentrate on the many accomplishments that have occurred under the
Republican Congress. I will continue to concentrate my efforts on
providing tax and regulatory relief and achieving a higher quality of
life for the people I serve.
Rep. Tauscher responds:
As a member of the Democratic caucus, I cannot really comment with much
validity on the impact of the recent "coup" attempt on the Republican
conference. I do believe, however, that if all Members of Congress
concentrated as much time on doing the business of the people who sent
us here as some Members do on the internal machinations of the House
leadership, we could get much more accomplished.
