As Congresswoman Kay Granger heads into the month of July, she is one a legislative roll. Her first coup involved The Higher Education and Learning Promotion Act of 1997. The bill, which she introduced on June 5, was quickly incorporated into the Republicans tax cut proposal passed in the House. The legislation would allow those receiving the proposed $500 per child tax credit to place that money in a tax-free educational savings account.
Her other major achievement focused on continuing support for the F-16 fighter. The jet, manufactured by Fort Worth-based Lockheed Martin, was dropped from the original Defense Appropriations Bill for 1998-99. Rep. Granger after discussing the project with members of the committee and working with other members who sought to reinstate the jet programs, convinced the committee to restore funding for the program thus protecting the 11,000 jobs that the Lockheed Martin plant produces. Early in June, Representative Granger also appeared at the PBS station serving the Dallas/Fort Worth area. She was interviewed on the new KERA/KDTN program On the Record She represents the 12th District of Texas, an area stretching from the eastern edge of Fort Worth to Weatherford, 12 miles to the west. The 12th District's most famous representative is former Speaker Jim Wright. Stories available on Rep. Kay Granger:
