@the Capitol will feature periodic, in-depth reports on specific issues being debated by Congress. Check here for an archive of those reports in addition to previews of upcoming debates.

Campaign Finance Reform

After weeks of debate and dozens of amendments, the Senate adopts the most sweeping campaign reform since Watergate. Now the House considers similar legislation.

Upcoming: The Bush Energy Proposal
With soaring gas prices at the pump and rolling blackouts threatening the nation this summer, the president has introduced a major proposal to deal with energy shortfalls in the nation. Touching on controversial issues such as nuclear power and drilling for domestic gas and oil, the bill promises to be the focus of heated debate. The Senate Power Shift
Isolated by his party's conservative agenda, Republican Senator James Jeffords announces he will leave the party and become an Independent. The move, called a "one man coup" by GOP leader Sen. Trent Lott, gives operational control of the Senate to Democrats and threatens to derail the president's judicial nominees and other legislative priorities.
