Frequently Asked Questions
We've compiled a list of the most Frequently Asked Questions that show up in the email bag.
MAIN: About Us

1. How can I get a transcript of a particular segment or show?

The PBS NewsHour posts transcripts of the daily news summary and show segments by the end of the next business day. Some transcripts may be available sooner. Visit our recent programs page and click on the headline for each story to go to the transcript page.

2. How can I get a DVD copy of a particular segment or show?

DVDs are available for entire shows or individual segments. For information, email and be sure to include the date, time, and title of the show. Please refrain from sending emails not related to obtaining a DVD.

3. How can I find the transcript of a story that aired last week/month/year?

We permanently archive much of our content for free. You can search PBS NewsHour content on the Web by using the search box on any page.

Additionally, we offer archives organized into months and year based on the entire NewsHour broadcast at our Recent Programs page and by Region and Topic through the navigation at the top of each page.

4. Do I need permission to use a transcript for educational (or other) purposes?

To obtain permission to use a transcript of a NewsHour story for educational or other purposes, email our director of research, Annette Miller (amiller@newshour.org), or send a letter by surface mail to her care of:

MacNeil/Lehrer Productions
2700 South Quincy Street
Arlington, VA 22206

Please refrain from sending email or postal mail that is not related to obtaining permission. Thank you.

5. Why aren't transcripts and streaming media available during or immediately following the NewsHour broadcast (or not at all)?

Transcripts for NewsHour broadcasts come from a professional transcription service. The transcription, editing, proofreading, and Web production take time. Transcripts of two segments from each broadcast are usually posted on the site by 9 PM Eastern Time each night. Transcripts of the remaining segments are usually posted by the end of the next business day.

Audio recordings of the broadcast are usually available within an hour after the end of the program (approximately 8 p.m. ET).

We post video (when we have the necessary rights) the next business day. Occasionally we cannot stream a segment due to legal agreements which limit use of the footage to a one-time broadcast.

6. How can I get in touch with Jim Lehrer or anyone on the NewsHour Staff?

You can send a letter to Jim Lehrer or anyone on the NewsHour staff care of:

MacNeil/Lehrer Productions
2700 South Quincy Street
Arlington, VA 22206

NewsHour staff and guests' personal information (telephone number, email, and regular mail address) is not available.

If you are a member of an organization seeking to contact NewsHour personnel for official reasons (such as an invitation to speak), please use the address above.

Viewer mail is compiled and distributed to NewsHour producers and correspondents on a daily basis. We welcome and appreciate your feedback. If you would like to comment on NewsHour programming, click here.

7. What happens to the email and letters?

Viewer feedback about the NewsHour is very important to us, and we encourage your comments. Email comments are distributed daily to NewsHour producers and correspondents. We do not edit the messages except to remove personal information such as street addresses and telephone numbers (to protect your privacy). If you found the PBS NewsHour through the PBS website and would like to know more about the PBS privacy policy, click here.

Due to the high volume of email we receive, the NewsHour is generally unable to respond to individual questions or comments, confirm receipt of a message, or post all viewer correspondence on the Web.

Please note: For security reasons, all emails with file attachments are automatically deleted. These include JPEG image files, text files, executable code such as .EXE or .VBS files, "vCards" and forwarded messages sent as attachments. Solicitations, encrypted emails, or messages containing expletives (literal or implied) also are deleted.

8. Do you share or exchange email lists with anyone?

No. The NewsHour respects the privacy of its viewers and never shares, sells, or exchanges email lists with any other organization or individual. If you found the PBS NewsHour through the PBS website and would like to know more about the PBS privacy policy, click here.

9. How do I stop the NewsHour subscription emails from coming?

Visit the following link: http://www.pbs.org/newshour/subscriptions_email.html, and click the button next to the service you would like to stop receiving. Then type the email address that you would like to unsubscribe into the box provided and click the "Submit" button. This is the preferred method.

If you subscribe to any of the services under multiple email accounts, you must unsubscribe each one separately.

10. How do I report a broken link?

When you reach our "broken link" error page, click the "back" button on your browser once. Highlight and copy the URL (Web address) of that page from the address window and then paste it into an email to us, at onlineda@newshour.org. We will make every effort to fix the link and notify you when it works.

11. Do I need permission to link to your website from mine?

You don't need our permission to link to PBS NewsHour from your website. But please let us know if you do. Also, PBS NewsHour archives all of its content, so the link will never change or expire.

12. Do I need permission to use your streaming video or audio in my website?

We're sorry, but NewsHour streaming video and audio clips are for PBS use only. You may not incorporate the media files directly into your site. However, you may link to the specific index or transcript page which contains a link to the video clip. PBS NewsHour permanently archives all of its content, so the link will always work.

13. You interviewed me or I know someone interviewed recently for the show. How can I find out when the piece will air?

Due to the dynamic nature of news, it's impossible to predict exactly when a particular segment will air. Often segments are pre-empted by late-breaking stories and saved for later dates. PBS NewsHour posts transcripts, audio, and video clips on the next business day after a segment airs.

We also post headlines of the upcoming stories each day. Check the recent programs page in the afternoon (usually between 4 and 5 p.m. Eastern Time) for a preview of the evening lineup. Please note that these schedules are subject to last-minutes changes.

If you would like to be notified in advance of the NewsHour's science or poetry segments, you can sign up to receive alerts by visiting our email subscription page.

14. Who do I contact if I'm a teen-ager who wants to write for Online NewsHour Extra?

If you want to write a story for Online NewsHour Extra, send an email to extra@newshour.org.

Please do not send viewer comments about NewsHour programming to this email address. If you have a question or comment about a NewsHour segment, send it to onlineda@newshour.org. Thank you for your cooperation.

15. Who wrote the theme music and where can I get a copy?

The theme music to the NewsHour with Jim Lehrer was written by Bernard Hoffer for the MacNeil/Lehrer Report. Unfortunately, recordings aren't available for purchase.

16. Where is Robert MacNeil?

Robert MacNeil retired in 1995 after 20 years with the NewsHour. He is still active in MacNeil/Lehrer Productions. MacNeil also has written several novels, including "Breaking News" (Doubleday, 1998) and "Burden of Desire" (Harvest Books, 1998), as well as nonfiction titles, including a collection of his memoirs, "Word Struck" (Penguin USA, 1990).

Click here for Jim Lehrer's interview with Robert MacNeil on Oct. 20, 2005 -- the NewsHour's 30th anniversary.

17. I'm looking for more information on a particular topic. Can you email me about it?

Feel free to browse our archives by topic or region. All of the information we have on a particular topic is on the website. If you use NewsHour material in academic work, be sure to cite us.

We cannot grant requests for email addresses of guests, or outside organizations mentioned or represented on the NewsHour.

18. The NewsHour recently moved to a different time and I can't see it any more because of my schedule. Can you please switch back to the old time slot?

Programming decisions such as when the NewsHour airs in your local community are made by the local PBS member station. Please contact your local station regarding schedule changes. To find your local station, click here to go to the PBS "Station Finder" Web page. Additionally, visit our Local TV Listings page to learn when the NewsHour is broadcast in your area.
