News Summary Correspondent

The News Summary Correspondent on the PBS NewsHour's Digital Newsdesk will play a pivotal role as the program integrates its Online and Broadcast activities.

The Correspondent, in consultation with other members of the daily news production team, will select, write and sub-edit stories for inclusion in several video news summaries that will be carried prominently on the home page of the PBS NewsHour's Web site. The news summaries will update visitors to the Web site on the major national and international news stories of the day, and will be illustrated by videotape and sound derived from a variety of sources (the PBS NewsHour's proprietary video and/or incoming agency video feeds).

The video news summaries will also serve to build audience loyalty to the nightly broadcast by offering viewers a 'tease' of what they'll find "later tonight" on PBS, and by offering an occasional window on the PBS NewsHour's editorial process as it unfolds.

In addition, the Correspondent will script, sub-edit and host the nightly News Digest that will appear on the “PBS NewsHour” broadcast. The Correspondent will also appear on-camera during the “PBS NewsHour” as required to cross-promote the content available to viewers on the broadcast's Web site. The Correspondent will be responsible for selecting appropriate videotape to illustrate stories in the news summaries. The Correspondent will also be proficient (or will be trained to be proficient) in Final Cut Pro digital video editing, and will be expected to edit video material on a daily basis for inclusion in the daily news summaries.

The Correspondent will be called upon to write regularly for the PBS NewsHour's blog, and to periodically conduct broadcast interviews with newsmakers and analysts that will be excerpted on the PBS NewsHour's Web site. Working in close co-ordination with the PBS NewsHour's executive editorial management, the Correspondent will help shape the tone and content of daily coverage on the Web site.

The Correspondent must be comfortable working in a fluid daily news environment, one that involves sharing resources with other members of the daily production team, managing multiple deadlines and priorities under demanding pressures. The Correspondent also will be expected to assist with the NewsHour’s forward planning needs in a continuing bid to enhance the experience of the PBS NewsHour's various audiences.

The Correspondent will be based in the Newsroom of the PBS NewsHour's Studio Building in Arlington, Va., and will report to the Associate Executive Producer of the PBS Newshour.
