   Arts and Entertainment Archive

Welcome to Art Beat, a new blog covering news, issues and events in art and entertainment, brought to you by NewsHour correspondent Jeffrey Brown and NewsHour reporters. You will find interviews with authors, artists and musicians, coverage of art exhibitions and concerts, and multimedia features such as videos and narrated slideshows.

We expect Art Beat to widen our arts coverage by serving as a home for additional reporting on arts pieces you may have seen on the NewsHour with Jim Lehrer. Extended interviews and bonus footage or images from performances or shows will all be here.

If you have questions, ideas or comments, please e-mail us at artbeat@newshour.org. Please sign up for the podcast, feeds as well as the e-mail alert, which will let you know when an arts piece will air.

Most of all, please leave comments. We want to hear what you think. Enjoy!

Daya : I am so thrilled that you are making this commitment to the arts, particularly in view of the present economy. As states cut budgets every way they can, often the arts are first in line for a haircut. If anything, we need the arts more now than ever. Yes, to using this format to bring the arts into classrooms. They may have lost their budget for materials, but at least you can keep ideas flowing....Grateful for your choices and your support.

Linda L. Phillips : Fantastic! It is wonderful to know that this country by way of television and the internet is once again moving forward in the arts. Our thoughts in these confusing times will be enhanced and perhaps will be able to find solutions for one or many. Thank you.

Robert A. Ramsay : I hope that you will include music in your list of "arts". May I recommend that you consider an interview with the "dean of American composers", Elliot Carter, who has just reached his 100th birthday and is still composing. The New York Times has had several recent articles about him and about his more than 130 compisitions. And please give us examples of his work!

KenWryn : Wonderful! Very glad to see 'News Hour' add Art to the program. Art has 33,000+ years of history stating "We are!" Thank you giving Art recognition!

John Hodges : I would like to recommend that you consider Richard Elliott's "Art in Public Places" as a subject for one of your programs. His medium is unique in that he uses reflectors for his art. He has many art pieces in Public Places throughout the USA, and particularly on the West Coast in such places as art galleries, public buildings, rapid transit facilities, schools, etc. I will try to send you some published information about his work in a separate email.

Nicole Hyde : Speaking as an artist, PBS news covering the arts is my favorite Christmas gift this year! I'll surely be as avid a reader of this blog, as I am a watcher of the News Hour. I really hope that there will be arts coverage from across the nation and not just focused on eastern/NYC arts. There is a vibrant visual art scene going on here in Denver (and the west/southwest in general). Many thanks for this blog and count me, "delighted!"

Shana Kohnstamm : As a working artist, I am heart-warmed that News Hour is helping to bring the Arts to a wider forum. With the economic situation as it is, not only are public art programs being cut, but the private sector is tightening belts as well. Fortunately, we artists will take validation in many forms...Thank you Jeffrey.

Danielle : I was very excited to hear that Newshour will be covering the Arts. As an artist in a conservative midwestern town, PBS and NPR are precious windows to the world for me. Thank you for continuing to broadcast quality television. Also, I must admit that I have a bit of a crush on Jeffrey Brown...

Pat Vozab : Jeffrey Brown conveys his excitement at the launch of this new artbeat project. It will be a great addition to the already terrific Newshour lineup. I think the idea of a possible online book club seems especially interesting. Thanks!

Philip Noyed : I am excited to learn about the expanded arts coverage on the Newshour and on this Art Beat web site. There is such little coverage of the arts on TV. I am looking forward to seeing broader coverage of the arts in NewsHour broadcast stories and more in-depth presentations online. Thank you!

George : It is fantastic that a major public broadcaster is making this commitment to the arts. I have long enjoyed Newshour (we get it in Australia on the following day) and I am looking forward to the same depth and intelligence AND range from your arts reporting! Good Luck!

Michael Watt : I endorse another commentator's request about covering the performing arts, in particular music, on Art Beat. One of the more interesting reports in the past was the story on the MacDowell Colony, which launched Insider Forum. The USA has produced a great number of composers employing a wide range of styles from early traditionalists, nationalists and experimentalists to minimalists. As a viewer from Australia, I would welcome coverage of activities relating to American composers and classical music in the USA on Art Beat. There is certainly no alternative for an audience in Australia to become better informed about the arts in the USA other than through the NewsHour program.

damasito : Bravo! With the diminishing support for the arts in most municipal and states budget, it has become imperative to search for ways to--at least-- talk and featured some for of art on television. the arts in moribund in television and cities budgets, for such reason(s), I thank the News-hour for its efforts. We all need a little bit of art in our lives; what would human life would be without it? A vast desolate cave.
