By W.S. Merwin
'The Shadow of Sirius' by W.S. Merwin
All day the stars watch from long ago
my mother said I am going now
when you are alone you will be all right
whether or not you know you will know
look at the old house in the dawn rain
all the flowers are forms of water
the sun reminds them through a white cloud
touches the patchwork spread on the hill
the washed colors of the afterlife
that lived there long before you were born
see how they wake without a question
even though the whole world is burning

WB : "Rain Light" is simpily written -- but so complex in meaning. A work of another age, perhaps, or of a rural setting, but so relevant to us all.

Earl : How wonderful of PBS to give us the jewel of the Poetry Series. How wonderful a gift Merwin's poetry is for this troubled era.

Ilene : Beautifully written, melodic. I love the meaning that children will be alright without their mothers that mothers/fathers teach their children to be strong on their own.

Ray : I have woken up one orange morning, very beutiful, just after a shower and I instantly saw this poem. So he believes in life after this life, or our ability to pick ourselves up when we are down and begin anew (9th line)... its a poem for the current times.
