Quincy Jones, who was Michael Jackson's longtime friend and record producer, joined me by phone Friday afternoon to talk about Jackson's life and legacy:

Earlier Friday, Jones released this statement on his Web site:

"I am absolutely devastated at this tragic and unexpected news. For Michael to be taken away from us so suddenly at such a young age, I just don't have the words. Divinity brought our souls together on The Wiz and allowed us to do what we were able to throughout the 80's. To this day, the music we created together on 'Off The Wall,' 'Thriller' and 'Bad' is played in every corner of the world and the reason for that is because he had it all...talent, grace, professionalism and dedication. He was the consummate entertainer and his contributions and legacy will be felt upon the world forever. I've lost my little brother today, and part of my soul has gone with him."

Friday on the NewsHour, Jeffrey Brown talked to Anthony DeCurtis, contributing editor for Rolling Stone magazine, and KCRW Public Radio's Garth Trinidad about Michael Jackson's life and death.

Kev Stew : I grew up in a musical family too, but I am so glad my Dad and Brother always stressed fun over money, marketing, or fame. I doubt I will find the success in music Michael did, but everytime I sing, I will try to think of the Jackson family and I pray often for them to be comforted by how Michael Jackson desired to be selfless and show his love to people.

NathanielN : We can't deny the fact that the recession really affects our life especilly of those big companies. Most of them are laying off employees or closing due to bankruptcy. Vibe Magazine is on of those companies that are directly affected by the crisis that our country is experiencing. The magazine began in 1993, started by music biz legend Quincy Jones, a guy who has worked with everyone from Ray Charles to Michael Jackson, as an alternative to magazines like Rolling Stone, and had been a very successful magazine. He has stated that he would like to keep Vibe magazine alive as an online journal, and many people would still line up quick cash to subscribe.
