Pop star Michael Jackson died Thursday afternoon of an apparent cardiac arrest, the Los Angeles Times reported. He was 50. Jackson was rushed to the UCLA Medical Center by the paramedics after they found him at his home not breathing and tried to administer CPR.

"Pop star Michael Jackson was pronounced dead by doctors this afternoon after arriving at a hospital in a deep coma, city and law enforcement sources told The Times," the newspaper reported on its Web site.

On the NewsHour tonight, Jim Lehrer talked to USA TODAY music critic Steve Jones about Jackson's life and musical legacy.

A musical prodigy, he began performing with his brothers as a child as the Jackson 5, making his television debut at age 11. Most recently, Jackson had been preparing for a series of sold-out performances in London.

Here are some classic Jackson clips.

Art Beat Editor Author Profile Page : Michael Jackson's death was confirmed during our live broadcast. Jim reported on Jackson's hospitalization in the news summary, but later in the show broke in to announce he had died. Jim also talked to music critic Steve Jones of USA Today later in the show about Jackson. We'll post that video here asap.

David Chowes : NEWSHOUR, Correct me if I'm wrong. There are at least two 'feeds' of THE NEWSHOUR -- AT 6E and 7E. Usually the 7 o'clock feed is a repeat of the 6PM program.

Zeety : I saw ABC confirm the death on its 6:30pm broadcast after seeing it online, then I tuned in to the Newshour. I did see Jim Lerher confirm Jackson had died later on in the broadcast after asking above. My first first guess was that the program was taped, but as it turned out I was actually watching the live version. The AP has a story about how most people found out about it online rather than TV News and that there were many confusing reports. TMZ actually broke the story first. Someone joked they'd rather have heard Jackson announcing the death of TMZ :) Anyway, Jackson was a music icon but there are many serious things going on in the world now, which is why I watch the Newshour.

Life long fan : What a loss to the world. I am still in shock over his passing. I hope he finds the peace he was searching for all his life in the after life and in his next life. He influenced so many people in so many ways. I danced to Thriller, Bille Jean, Dirty Diana, Bad, Black or White, and practically all his songs. I wanted a pet tiger like him. I wanted to moon walk like him. No matter the controversy, I always idolized him. Barron Pilgrim-your poem is beautiful.

Sara : I went through my Michael phase -- or, at least the most obsessive part of it -- between the ages of 8 and 12. My dad had (I say had because I have them now) Thriller and Off The Wall on wax, and we used to listen to them and dance them as little kids. When I was 8, we (my little sister and I) bought our very own cassette tapes of Bad and Dangerous. Then, when I was 10, HIStory came out. It was his first compilation, a greatest hits album mixed with new material. When you bought the big fancy one at Tower Records (yes, Tower Records), you got a VHS tape of all of Michael's videos. The tape/VHS combination caused so much strife between my sister and I. I had bought the casette tape for myself, and my dad sprang for the VHS addition, so I was convinced the entire set was mine. My sister begged to differ. There were huge screaming fights, tantrums and fits thrown over who got to listen to HIStory, who got to watch it -- usually settled when my mom put the VHS on and we sat down, entranced. That summer, we went to St. Thomas to visit my aunt, uncle and cousin, as we did every summer. My clearest 10 year old memory is sitting in the backseat of my dad's rental car, driving through Charlotte Amalie -- the only town to be had on St. Thomas -- with my headphones firmly on my ears, and my tape of Bad on it's 4th rotation so far that day. You couldn't get those headphones off me if you tried that summer. Last night my whole family went out to dinner -- on Saturday afternoon my sister leaves to go to Italy for the summer. Sitting there, reminiscing about funny college stories, funny travel stories, and, of course, Michael Jackson, my mom let out a derisive snort. "Do you remember only two people we had to buy you two separate tapes for?" she asked. "No," my sister replied. I kept my mouth shut, because I did. "Michael Jackson," my mom rolled her eyes, "and HANSON." I still have those tapes. Well, not Hanson.

A Mother of Sons : I am 8yrs older than Michael and I remember when he was first on the Ed Sullivan Show....I have three sons and I must say that I am so sad because I have always felt that Michael did not ever have a chance to just be a "normal kid" and it has shown now esp in his older years...I feel very angry at, not only His Father and Mother but, his siblings for seeing only the MONEY and not the real person behind it all...I honestly felt he was dealt a raw deal even if he had all the money and fame in the world...Michael was not at peace....what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his soul....he had so many talents and so many gifts and I just feel that people used him for their gain and not because they saw the real human behind the reconstructed outside shell...and what was that all about anyway?? I am just sad very sad for him and how decieved he was and how his family just let him become more deluded as the years went on...Money or not if one of my sons behaved like he started to this Mother would have been up in his stuff and constantly also...but that's just me I guess...still my heart breaks for this man and always will.

Tlowe hope : Unfortunately this is the opportunity that most radio stations and TV Networks such as BET and MTV are broadcasting songs and videos appropriate for the entire Family and that what MJ was all about. Irregardless of the fruity pundits and corrupt individuals who are attempting to drag his name in the mud the numbers and countries showing love don't lie. Most of them are not worthy of unlacing Michael shoe laces and they have the audacity to criticize a man who changed the world with his artist skills for the good. Study the words of his music and interactions off the networks and you will see a human god.
