Monday on the NewsHour, Jeffrey Brown looks at the career of choreographer Merce Cunningham, who died Sunday night at age 90.

Below is an extended interview with David Vaughan, who has been with Merce Cunningham's dance company for more than forty years. He is also the author of the biography, "Merce Cunningham: Fifty Years."

    Tom : They don't make 'em like that any more: his dance was not about jazzy, trendy costumes, celebrity, obsession, pomp, psychotic romance....it was about movement....something organic, without being hippie-fied....but about being human, not a star. Now that he is gone, dance has to be re-imagined if it is going to live in the way that it did for artists of the '50s and '60s.

    joanna g harris : Merce was a friend, teacher and lively part of the SF Bay Area dance community. I had the joy of knowing him 53 years. He and his company visited my house often and brought the intelligence and joy of his imagination and invention to our lives.
