Alex Prud'homme and Julia Child; photo by Sarah Prud'homme

For decades on PBS, Julia Child brought her infectious enthusiasm for French cooking into the kitchens of her rapt viewers, passing on the culinary lessons she had learned during the years she lived in France.

"Julie & Julia," a new film opening today, tells Child's story, along with that of Julie Powell, whose blog chronicled her endeavor to prepare all of the recipes in Child's "Mastering the Art of French Cooking."

The film was written and directed by Nora Ephron, who adapted the two women's best-selling memoirs for the movie. Recently I spoke with journalist and author Alex Prud'homme, Child's grand-nephew, who co-wrote her memoir, "My Life in France." Prud'homme joined me by phone from his office in Manhattan:

James : Mr. Prud'homme indeed has a privileged vantage point, which he shares with clarity and ease. A very insightful interview, especially for those who have just seen the film. I'm looking forward to reading his book.

Candy : I grew up watching Julia Child with my family on PBS when I was a kid. We scrambled to write down the recipes to recreate her dishes in our own kitchen. She was funny, exciting and opened our eyes to great food. Julia has always been an inspiration for me. I am so excited that she is made popular once again. We all need to take time to cook and cook well, it helps us discover ourselves and brings our famlies together in a way nothing else can. Bon Appetit!

Ferrel : It was WONDERFUL to have a chance to see Julia Childs in person, so to speak, again. I can hardly wait to get to the stove after Elegance with Eggs!! Thanks for making it available.

Nick : This was a great interview in most ways, but Mr. Prudhomme misspoke when he translated "belle soeur" as "beatiful sister" -- its actual meaning is less romantic: simply "sister-in-law."

CHURCHORGAN77 : The link to watch full episodes of Julia Child doesn't work. It brings up the screen as if it will work, but then says "the selected episode is unavalible at this time". This happens for every selected episode.

Candace : The link to watch full episodes of Julia Child is broken. It brings up the screen as if it will play the movie, but then says "the selected episode is unavalible". This occurs for every episode.
