At 82, Philip Levine is author of some 20 volumes of verse and is one of the nation's most honored poets with a Pulitzer Prize and numerous other awards. But he started life in Detroit, working in auto plants and sometimes waiting in lines for a job. Levine recently joined me at the Yancey Richardson Gallery in New York. He'd written an essay for an exhibition of photographs by Andrew Moore that captured a lost world of Detroit -- an old school, homes and factories, including Ford's River Rouge Plant, where Levine himself once worked. We'll post that conversation here later. Meantime, you can watch an extended interview with Levine, as well as the poet reading more of his work on our Poetry Series page. Here's Levine reading "What Work Is": More videos can be found on our Poetry Series page. |
